RPE Tracking

What is RPE?

RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) is a scale from 1-10 that measures how hard a set felt. An RPE of 10 means you couldn't do another rep, while an RPE of 7 means you had about 3 reps left in reserve. It's a popular method for autoregulating training intensity.

How do I enable RPE tracking?

Go to More > Settings and enable "Show RPE". Once enabled, you'll see an RPE field for each set during your workout where you can log your perceived exertion.

Why should I track RPE?

RPE helps you manage fatigue and adjust training intensity based on how you feel. If you're having a great day, you might push harder. If you're fatigued, you can dial back while still making progress. It's also useful for reviewing past workouts to understand your performance patterns.

Is RPE included in exports?

Yes! RPE values are included when you export your workout history to CSV or create a backup. This lets you analyze your training intensity over time in a spreadsheet.

Templates

How do I create a template?

Open a completed workout and tap the bookmark icon to save it as a template.

Can I edit a template?

Yes! Go to the Programs tab, tap the template you want to edit, then tap the menu button and select Edit. You can rename the template, add or remove exercises, reorder them, and adjust target values like sets, reps, weight, duration, and distance for each exercise.

How do I use a template?

Yes! Tap "View Charts and Trends" on the Body tab, then use the chips to select which measurement to view. You can filter by time period (week, month, year, all time).

Progress Photos

How do I take progress photos?

Go to the Body tab and add or edit a measurement. Each measurement has three photo slots: Front, Side, and Back. Tap any slot to take a new photo with the camera or choose one from your library. For best results, use consistent lighting, poses, and times of day.

What is Ghost Mode?

Ghost Mode is a camera feature that overlays a semi-transparent image of your previous progress photo on the viewfinder. This helps you match your exact pose, angle, and framing for consistent before/after comparisons. When you have a previous photo for that pose (Front, Side, or Back), you'll see the "Camera (Ghost Mode)" option when adding a new photo.

How do I use Ghost Mode?

Tap a photo slot and select "Camera (Ghost Mode)". You'll see your previous photo overlaid on the camera. Use the slider at the bottom to adjust the overlay opacity (more or less transparent). Tap the eye icon to toggle the overlay on/off. Position yourself to align with the ghost image, then tap the capture button. You can also tap the photo icon to choose a different reference photo.

Where are my photos stored?

Progress photos are stored privately on your device only—they are not synced via iCloud or uploaded to any external servers. Your photos are included in iPhone backups and in GymJC app backups (zip files), so they'll be restored when you restore your device or import a backup.

Can I save photos to my Photo Library?

Yes! When you take a progress photo with the camera, you'll be asked if you want to also save it to your Photo Library. This is optional and your preference is remembered. You can change this setting anytime in More > Settings.

Can I compare before and after photos?

Yes! Open different measurement entries to compare your Front, Side, and Back photos over time. Tap any photo to view it full screen. You can pinch to zoom in on details and double-tap to reset the zoom.

How do I delete a progress photo?

Open the measurement containing the photo. Long press the photo to see the delete option, or tap it to view full screen where you'll find the delete button. The photo is permanently removed from your device.

Tools

How does the 1RM Calculator work?

The 1RM (One Rep Max) Calculator estimates the maximum weight you can lift for a single rep based on a weight and rep count you've actually performed. It uses the Epley formula and shows estimates for different rep ranges (1RM, 3RM, 5RM, etc.).

How accurate is the 1RM Calculator?

The Epley formula is most accurate for rep ranges of 1-10. Estimates become less reliable for very high rep counts. It's a useful guide for planning your training, but always approach maximal lifts with proper form and safety measures.

How does the Plate Calculator work?

Enter your target total weight and the bar weight (default is 20kg/45lbs for a standard Olympic bar). The calculator shows exactly which plates to load on each side with a visual barbell diagram using IWF standard plate colors.

What if I can't make the exact weight?

If the exact weight isn't possible with your available plates, the calculator shows the closest achievable weight and tells you what smaller plates you'd need. Tap plates in the selector to mark which ones are available at your gym.

Statistics

What statistics does GymJC track?

GymJC tracks your workout streak, total workouts, workouts per muscle group, total volume lifted, and personal records for each exercise.

How is workout volume calculated?

Volume is calculated as weight × reps × sets for each exercise, then totaled for your workout. This helps you track progressive overload over time.

How are personal records calculated for strength exercises?

For weight-based exercises, GymJC uses your estimated one rep max (e1RM) calculated with the Epley formula: weight × (1 + reps/30). This means a set of 100 kg × 10 reps (e1RM ~133 kg) can beat a previous PR of 120 kg × 1 rep (e1RM ~124 kg). This rewards both heavy singles and high-rep sets fairly.

How are personal records calculated for assisted exercises?

For assisted exercises like assisted pull-ups or assisted dips (where the machine helps lift part of your bodyweight), GymJC calculates an "equivalent load" that increases as you get stronger. Lower assistance + more reps = higher equivalent load = new PR. The value shown with a ~ prefix (e.g., "~150 kg") represents your strength level comparable to weighted exercises. This lets you track real progress even when using assistance machines.

How do I see my progress for a specific exercise?

Go to Statistics, then tap "Progress & Records" to see all your personal records. Tap any exercise to view detailed progress charts showing your weight, reps, and estimated 1RM over time.

What does the muscle distribution chart show?

The muscle distribution chart shows which muscle groups you've trained during your workout, based on the exercises you've completed. It helps ensure balanced training across all muscle groups.

iCloud & Data Sync

How do I sync my data across devices?

GymJC uses iCloud to sync automatically. Make sure you're signed into the same iCloud account on all devices and that iCloud is enabled for GymJC (Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Apps Using iCloud > GymJC).

Why isn't my data syncing?

Check that: (1) You're signed into the same iCloud account on all devices, (2) iCloud is enabled for GymJC, (3) You have an internet connection, and (4) iCloud isn't running low on storage.

How long does sync take?

Sync typically happens within seconds, but can take longer on slow connections or after periods offline. The app will automatically sync when connectivity is restored.

Backup & Export

How do I back up my data?

Go to the More tab and tap Backup to create a full backup. This saves all your workouts, templates, custom exercises, body measurements, and progress photos as a zip file that you can share or store safely.

Are progress photos included in backups?

Yes! When you create a backup, all your progress photos are included in the zip file. When you restore a backup, your photos are restored along with all other data.

How do I restore a backup?

Go to More > Backup and select "Restore Backup". Choose your backup file (zip) and the app will restore all your data including progress photos. Note: restoring will replace your current data.

Can I export to Excel/CSV?

Yes! On the Training tab, tap the three-dot menu in the top bar and select Export to export your workout history. On the Body tab, use the same menu to export your body measurements. Both export as CSV files that open in Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet app.

Custom Exercises

How do I create a custom exercise?

When adding an exercise to a workout, tap the + button in the top right corner. Enter a name, select the muscle group, equipment type, and tracking method (weight & reps, bodyweight, duration, or distance).

Can I add instructions to custom exercises?

Yes! When creating or editing a custom exercise, you can add notes and instructions that will appear when you tap the info icon.

How do I edit or delete a custom exercise?

Go to More > Custom Exercises to see all your custom exercises. Tap one to edit its details, or swipe left to delete it.

Can I create a variation of an existing exercise?

Yes! Tap the info icon on any exercise (built-in or custom), then tap the copy icon in the top right. This creates a new custom exercise with the muscle group, equipment, and tracking type pre-filled. Just give it a new name and customize as needed—perfect for exercise variations like "Close Grip Bench Press" or "Pause Squats".

Widgets

How do I add a widget?

Long press on your home screen, tap the + button, search for "GymJC", and choose a widget size. Available widgets show your workout streak and weekly summary.

What widgets are available?

Home screen widgets come in small (weekly workout count), medium (workouts, average duration, and streak), and large (full weekly stats) sizes. Lock screen widgets show your weekly workout count and streak.

Live Activities

How do I enable Live Activities?

Live Activities are enabled by default. If you don't see them, check iOS Settings > GymJC > Live Activities. Once enabled, your active workout will appear on the lock screen and Dynamic Island.

What does Live Activity show?

The Live Activity displays your workout name, start time, and set progress (e.g., 2/4 sets). When resting between sets, the Lock Screen shows a countdown timer so you can see exactly how much rest time remains. On Dynamic Island, you'll see a compact view with set progress and resting status.

Subscription

What features require a subscription?

GymJC offers a free tier with core workout tracking. Premium features like unlimited workout history, advanced statistics, and body measurements require a subscription.

How do I restore my subscription?

Go to Settings > Subscription and tap "Restore Purchases". Make sure you're signed into the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.
